The problem
Intervention: Monitoring and analysis of social media conversations to detect changes in violence-related content and discussions
Who it was tested with: Social media users on Twitter and Reddit; study infers exposure to children indirectly.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Conversations on Twitter were reviewed to measure increases in abusive or hateful content, and cyberbullying, while testimonials from Reddit forums were examined to monitor changes in references to family violence before and after the start of the stay-at-home restrictions." The study used a before-after design by analyzing social media data in the periods before and after lockdown measures were implemented to detect changes in violence-related content.
Study measures online conversation volume and content rather than direct measurement of actual violence experienced by children; cannot establish causation or quantify actual harm; relies on proxy indicators through social media rather than direct child reporting or child protection data
