The problem
Intervention: Children receiving care and support from social services, identified through integration of care and support plans.
Who it was tested with: 24,540 children receiving care and support in Wales (April 2016 to March 2021), compared to 624,905 children not receiving welfare support; stratified into three groups: those receiving general support (n=12,480), those on child protection registers (n=6,225), and looked-after children (n=5,840)..
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"By accessing records held within the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank, vaccination status of children receiving social care and support between April 2016 and March 2021 (n = 24,540) was ascertained. This was achieved through linkage of the Children Receiving Care and Support (CRCS) Census and National Community Child Health Database." This represents a robust linkage of complete population data across a defined period with a clearly defined comparison group.
Data accuracy issues with the immunisation flag (only 70% validation accuracy) limit confidence in precise coverage estimates. The study cannot determine causality or identify specific reasons for timing delays. Recording practices and data completeness may vary across areas and time periods.
