The problem
Intervention: An integrated package of community-driven development grants targeting health and education outcomes, training for health providers on infant and young child feeding and growth monitoring, and training for sanitarians on a local variation of community-led total sanitation
Who it was tested with: Communities in 190 subdistricts (95 treatment, 95 control) across South Sumatra, West Kalimantan and Central Kalimantan provinces, Indonesia, including mothers and young children.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This cluster randomized controlled trial involved 95 treatment and 95 control subdistricts" shows a randomised design with a comparison group. The primary outcome showed no effect while some secondary outcomes improved, so the result is mixed.
Outcomes were measured about a year after the project ended, so later effects are unknown. The abstract does not give implementation details that would explain the lack of impact on stunting.
