The problem
Intervention: Survey to establish prevalence and identify risk factors for violence
Who it was tested with: Female and male children and youth aged 13-24 years in 20 refugee camps in Ethiopia (1,937 females and 1,536 males).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We drew on data from the Ethiopia Humanitarian Violence Against Children and Youth Survey (HVACS), a cross-sectional representative household survey conducted in 2024 among female and male children and youth drawn from 20 of the 23 refugee camps in Ethiopia. We used a three-stage cluster sampling design to identify and recruit children and young people for individual interviews." This is a descriptive survey establishing prevalence and associations rather than testing an intervention for effectiveness.
Cross-sectional design prevents causal inference; does not cover children under 13; recall bias possible for childhood violence experiences
