The problem
Intervention: Testing induced sputum with Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra, alongside liquid culture.
Who it was tested with: 636 children under 15 years investigated for pulmonary TB at Dora Nginza Hospital, South Africa, including infants, underweight children and children living with HIV..
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"prospectively enrolled between January 2018 and January 2024, and followed up for 12 months" shows a longitudinal cohort in which Ultra was compared against culture, so it fits the longitudinal part of the experimental tier.
This is a diagnostic accuracy study at one hospital with no randomised comparison. Culture is an imperfect reference standard, and 46.0% of Ultra positives were 'trace positive'. Most children had unconfirmed TB.
