The problem
Intervention: Examining whether good quality parent-child relationships (low conflict, high intimate disclosure) buffer negative effects of parental separation
Who it was tested with: 2,057 German children aged 7-15, of whom 99 experienced parental separation.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using longitudinal data from waves 2 to 13 (2009/2010 – 2020/2021) of the German Family Panel pairfam, we estimate fixed-effects models based on a sample of 2,057 children aged 7 to 15, 99 of whom experienced the separation of their parents." This is a longitudinal fixed-effects design with baseline and follow-up measurements, tracking children before and after parental separation with a comparison element through variation in relationship quality.
The study is observational rather than experimental; causality cannot be definitively established. Sample size of children experiencing separation is relatively small (n=99). Generalizability limited to Germany and specific age group.
