The problem
Intervention: Identification of correlates of non-immunisation to inform targeted interventions including improved caregiver health literacy, strengthened health-system responsiveness, continuity of child health records, and engagement with apostolic religious communities
Who it was tested with: Caregivers of 12-23 month-old children in Gokwe South District, rural Zimbabwe (n=573).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We examined factors associated with immunisation status among 12–23-month-old children in rural Zimbabwe, using a cross-sectional study among caregivers of 12–23-month-old children. These were selected using a multistage sampling strategy, with households randomly selected within health facility catchment areas." This is an observational study that identifies barriers to immunisation but does not test interventions to address them.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation. Study identifies correlates rather than testing an intervention, so effectiveness of recommended improvements is not evaluated. Findings are specific to one rural district.
