The problem
Intervention: Psychosocial stimulation delivered fortnightly for one year in small groups at community clinics by trained health workers, integrated into primary health care services for malnourished children aged 6-24 months
Who it was tested with: Approximately 480 malnourished children aged 6-24 months (identified by MUAC < 13.5 cm) and their mothers across rural community clinics in Bangladesh.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A subsample will be evaluated using a cluster randomized controlled trial in 48 CCs (24 intervention and 24 control). From each CC, 10 children aged 6-24 months will be tested before and after the programme." This describes a cluster randomized controlled trial design with intention-to-treat analysis, representing the highest evidence tier for intervention evaluation.
