The problem
Intervention: Routine obstetric and neonatal care for deliveries
Who it was tested with: 87 women with history of FGM delivering at Besançon University Hospital, compared with 696 women without FGM history.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"All deliveries taking place between January 2005 and June 2022 at Besançon University Hospital in patients with a history of FGM were included. This group was compared with a randomly selected group of deliveries of patients with no history of FGM." This is a comparison study with a comparison group, qualifying as experimental design, though observational rather than randomised.
Single-centre study in France may not generalise to other settings. The study does not control for potential confounding variables or examine mechanisms. Long-term child outcomes beyond the neonatal period are not assessed. The comparison group selection method may introduce bias.
