The problem
Intervention: Direct mobile phone recall notifications: trained EPI staff made up to six biweekly telephone calls over three months to caregivers of children overdue for vaccines on the national Expanded Programme on Immunization schedule
Who it was tested with: Children under five years old identified as overdue for one or more vaccines (excluding BCG) in 50 Primary Healthcare Centers in Baghdad with the lowest routine immunization performance (Karkh and Rusafa districts).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Trained EPI staff contacted caregivers through direct telephone calls, with up to six biweekly attempts over a three-month period. Standardized data collection forms were used under supervision of the Directorate of Public Health." This describes a clear intervention delivered over a defined period with outcome measurement, though without a concurrent comparison group.
The study lacked a comparison group, so it cannot isolate the effect of the intervention from other factors affecting vaccination uptake. No follow-up data are provided on whether children completed their full immunization schedules or on sustainability of the approach over time. The study only included the 50 lowest-performing PHCs, so results may not generalize to all settings.
