The problem
Intervention: Gavi funding and support programmes for vaccine procurement and immunisation services
Who it was tested with: 51 low-income countries eligible for Gavi support, children aged 12-23 months.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Taking a difference-in-differences quasi-experimental approach to observational data, we estimate the impact of Gavi eligibility on immunisation coverage and mortality rates over time, using WHO/UNICEF figures covering 1995-2016." This approach compares changes in eligible versus ineligible countries over time, which provides stronger evidence than simple before-after comparisons while controlling for baseline country differences.
Observational data with quasi-experimental design cannot definitively prove causation; potential unmeasured confounding; inability to identify which specific Gavi programmes drove outcomes; analysis is at country level rather than individual level
