The problem
Intervention: Emergency nutrition services including MUAC screening, food parcel distribution, and staff training
Who it was tested with: Children aged 6-59 months and food-insecure populations in Gaza during October 2023 conflict.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"UNRWA tracked emergency nutrition interventions in Gaza, including piloting and scaling middle upper arm circumference (MUAC) screening for under-5 children, capacity building for staff providing nutrition services and modifying food parcels to meet nutrition needs within the context of the war." This describes programme monitoring and implementation rather than a controlled evaluation; outcomes are measured as service outputs rather than child health changes.
The document tracks service delivery but does not report treatment outcomes for referred children, nutritional recovery rates, or mortality reductions. No comparison group exists to establish whether the intervention prevented worse outcomes compared to no intervention.
