The problem
Intervention: Retrospective assessment of maltreatment experiences during inpatient stays; recommendations for structural measures and zero-tolerance policies
Who it was tested with: German population aged 14-91 who had inpatient stays as children in medical institutions (46 in psychiatric hospitals, 474 in general/pediatric hospitals).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"In a large representative survey of the German population of 2,516 subjects aged between 14 and 91, the experience of child maltreatment in medical institutions by nursing staff was assessed retrospectively." This retrospective survey documents prevalence of maltreatment but does not evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, making it evidence of the problem rather than evidence of solutions.
Retrospective design based on adult recall of childhood experiences is subject to memory bias. Small sample sizes for some subgroups (n=46 for psychiatric hospitals). Study does not provide information on effectiveness of any specific interventions to prevent maltreatment.
