The problem
Intervention: Application of PaeD-TrICS (Paediatric dental triadic interaction coding scheme) to analyse and understand the communication strategies used by dental nurses and parents to encourage child participation
Who it was tested with: 22 children aged 2-5 years attending an oral health promotion session with a dental nurse and their parent in a general dental practice in Scotland.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Analysis of behavioural sequences with child participation as the dependent variable was conducted using multilevel modelling." The study used systematic observation and statistical modelling to identify which behaviours influence child participation, demonstrating which communication strategies are associated with engagement but not establishing whether changing these behaviours would improve participation.
Single dental nurse and clinic setting; observational design without intervention or comparison group; 28% of variance explained leaves 72% unexplained by the measured behaviours
