The problem
Intervention: Temporary monthly child tax credit implemented in 2021
Who it was tested with: Families with children in New York City.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"The authors assess these effects using data from two longitudinal studies of well-being in New York City." The study measured well-being outcomes in families receiving the credit using existing longitudinal data, which represents a pre-post design where the same families were tracked over time.
The study uses observational data from existing longitudinal studies rather than an experimental design with random assignment. The analysis does not have a comparison group that did not receive the credit.
