The problem
Intervention: Primary mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with age-dependent dosing (lower dose for children <12 years)
Who it was tested with: Children, adolescents and adults with Down syndrome aged 3-74 years (N=55 for T-cell measurements).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We evaluated vaccine-induced T-cell responses in children with DS following primary mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. We measured SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell abundance (N = 40) and their interferon-gamma (IFNγ) production (N = 55) after spike antigen re-stimulation in participants aged 3-74 y." The study measured immune responses across age groups receiving different vaccine doses to understand whether lower doses in younger children resulted in weaker cellular immunity.
The study measured T-cell responses at a single timepoint without a control group of children without Down syndrome for comparison. No information about clinical outcomes (infection rates or disease severity) is provided. The study does not distinguish between responses after different vaccine doses or schedules.
