The problem
Intervention: Pregnancy ultrasound scans (one or two additional scans beyond routine care) combined with messages to promote parental attachment and healthy child development
Who it was tested with: Pregnant mothers and fathers from Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa; 100 per arm.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The effect of messages to sensitise mothers and fathers to fetal development will be tested in a three-armed randomised trial with 100 mothers and their partners from Soweto, Johannesburg in each arm. The primary outcome is child development at 6 months postnatally." This is a prospective experimental design with randomised arms and defined outcomes, but no outcome data are available in this protocol document.
This is a trial protocol that presents the study design and hypotheses but does not report any results or findings from the trial execution
