The problem
Intervention: A 6-month online sex education program delivered via WeChat, grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior, designed to improve parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding early childhood sex education
Who it was tested with: Parents of preschool children from four kindergartens in Luzhou City, China (n=217).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"In a cluster-randomized trial conducted in 2022, parents of preschool children from four kindergartens in Luzhou City were assigned by class to receive either a 6-month online sex education program grounded in the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) via WeChat or conventional health education. Parental knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) were assessed at baseline and post-intervention." This is an experimental design with random cluster assignment and pre-post measurement, allowing for causal inference about intervention effects.
The study does not report effect sizes or specific magnitudes of change. Follow-up was limited to 6 months, so sustainability of improvements and impact on children's sexual health outcomes cannot be determined. Generalizability beyond Luzhou City is unclear.
