The problem
Intervention: Trauma-responsive approaches (TRAs) in children's homes, implemented as whole-system interventions focusing on relational safety, reflective practice, emotionally co-regulated care, and organisational alignment
Who it was tested with: Children and young people living in UK children's homes; residential practitioners; clinicians; commissioners; care-experienced young people.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"A rapid Realist review began in April 2025, following RAMESES standards... Evidence was drawn from academic and grey literature... Extensive stakeholder engagement included care-experienced young people, residential practitioners, clinicians, commissioners, and researchers, to guide and prioritise theory development, and validate findings." This demonstrates a realist synthesis approach that develops programme theory through stakeholder engagement to understand how and why interventions work in real-world contexts.
Realist review methodology relies on synthesis of existing literature rather than primary outcome measurement. Evidence base is described as heterogeneous and poorly operationalised. No specific quantified outcomes or effect sizes reported.
