The problem
Intervention: 8-week exercise training during the first weeks of treatment, plus one-time nutrition counselling for all participants, compared with a sham control intervention
Who it was tested with: Newly diagnosed patients with leukemia or lymphoma aged 10 to 17 years; six completed the trial (two in the intervention group).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"this prospective pilot randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of an exercise intervention" - a randomised design with a sham control group fits the experimental tier, but the very small sample and lack of effect analysis mean effectiveness is inconclusive.
Very small sample, high variability, limited generalisability, and no formal analysis of intervention effects. Challenges may be specific to early treatment.
