The problem
Intervention: Single dose of modified vaccinia Ankara–Bavaria Nordic (MVA-BN) vaccine administered for post-exposure prophylaxis
Who it was tested with: 87 children in England exposed to confirmed mpox cases during a 2022 outbreak; median age 5 years (IQR 5–9), 56% male, 49% White.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"All children receiving MVA–BN were asked to complete a post-vaccination questionnaire online and provide a blood sample 1 month and 3 months after vaccination. Blood samples were tested for humoural, cellular, and cytokine responses and compared with unvaccinated paediatric controls." This represents a pre-post assessment in an outbreak response setting with limited but documented follow-up measurements comparing vaccinated children's immune responses to unvaccinated controls.
Low response rates for questionnaires (52%) and blood samples (8% and 6% at follow-up timepoints) limit comprehensive assessment of safety and immunogenicity. Lack of randomised control group. Larger studies needed for definitive assessment.
