The problem
Intervention: Facility-based plus NGO-supported home-based growth monitoring and promotion programs compared to facility-based growth monitoring and promotion alone
Who it was tested with: 1,519 children aged 6-12 months in each program arm in rural Bangladesh.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Using a quasi-experimental design, 1,519 children aged 6-12 months were enrolled in each program and assessed at baseline and after 12 months." The study compared two intervention approaches in two separate groups measured before and after, with difference-in-difference analysis to assess comparative impacts, which is a quasi-experimental approach with comparison between groups.
Neither program demonstrated effectiveness in improving child linear growth or reducing stunting; the study does not investigate underlying reasons for program failure or contextual factors affecting implementation quality.
