The problem
Intervention: Interventions to decrease feelings of alienation and increase cognitive reappraisal strategies
Who it was tested with: Chinese adolescents aged 12-19 years (1,638 participants, 54.7% girls).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Path analyses showed that harsh parenting positively predicted NSSI, and alienation mediated this association. Both the direct effect of harsh parenting on NSSI and the indirect effect through alienation were moderated by cognitive reappraisal." This is an observational study that identifies theoretical associations rather than testing whether an intervention actually reduces NSSI.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation; self-report measures subject to bias; no intervention was actually tested, only associations examined; findings specific to Chinese context
