The problem
Intervention: School-based asthma therapy (SBAT) program providing directly observed preventive medication therapy through school nurses
Who it was tested with: 552 children with persistent, poorly controlled asthma in a large urban school district (2013-2019).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Retrospective academic record review (2013-2019) for 552 SBAT-enrolled children in a large urban district. Outcomes included missed instructional time, behavioral incidents, and grades compared across 4 quarters pre- and post-enrollment." This design measures the same group before and after intervention with no comparison group, making it a pre-post study that cannot establish causation but can document changes associated with the program.
Retrospective design without a control group limits causal inference. No information on program fidelity, adherence, or long-term follow-up. Lack of grade improvement despite reduced absences raises questions about whether attendance is the limiting factor for academic achievement.
