The problem
Intervention: Microenterprise intervention with business education, mentored apprenticeship, start-up grant, and behavioral economics-informed text messages on HIV prevention and employment
Who it was tested with: African-American young adults aged 18-24, experiencing homelessness in past 12 months, unemployed or underemployed, living in Baltimore City.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The trial aims to reduce sexual risk behaviors and increase employment and uptake of HIV preventive behaviors." This is a planned randomized comparison study with an experimental arm receiving the full microenterprise plus HIV prevention intervention and a comparison arm receiving job information only, meeting the definition of an experimental design.
This is a feasibility protocol, not an efficacy trial, so no evidence of intervention effectiveness is yet available. Results are expected to inform design of a larger trial.
