The problem
Intervention: Integrated sexual and reproductive health and economic empowerment programming delivered through community-based girls' groups, including income-generating activities, critical thinking, and mobilization of family support
Who it was tested with: Unmarried and married adolescent girls aged 15-19 in Kaduna and Ogun states, Nigeria.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"Data was collected concurrently in both groups before participants were involved in the intervention (baseline) and nine months after (endline) for the same participants." This concurrent comparison group design with baseline and endline measurement represents a quasi-experimental approach, as the study included an intervention group and a comparison group measured over time, though randomization was not used.
Study measured outcomes at only 9 months after baseline with no follow-up to assess sustainability; results varied substantially by state, suggesting context-specific factors influenced outcomes but the reasons for differences are not explained.
