Intervention: Identification and tracking of adolescent pregnancies with long-term psychiatric follow-up
Who it was tested with: 29,974 girls with adolescent pregnancy and 119,896 matched controls (aged, family income, residence, and psychiatric comorbidity matched), enrolled between 1996-2013.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A Cox regression model was used, adjusted for potential confounders, to estimate the risk of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder" - this represents a quasi-experimental design with matched controls and long-term follow-up, providing stronger evidence than simple observational studies, though still limited by its non-randomized nature.
Observational design cannot prove causation; unmeasured confounding factors may explain associations; country of origin not specified; cannot determine whether pregnancy itself causes psychiatric illness or if selection effects explain the findings
