The problem
Intervention: You and Me, Together Vape-free two-session school-based e-cigarette prevention curriculum addressing reasons for use, providing education on risks, and teaching refusal skills
Who it was tested with: Fifth-graders (N=130) from three elementary schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Participants completed pre- and post-curriculum surveys to assess exposure to use, learning outcomes, refusal skills, coping skills, self-efficacy, and intentions to use." The study measures changes in knowledge and skills before and after a single intervention with no comparison condition, making it a pre-post evaluation design.
No comparison group to control for natural changes or secular trends. Only 130 of 165 participants had matched pre-post responses. Study only measures immediate post-curriculum outcomes and knowledge gains, not behavioral outcomes or long-term retention.
