The problem
Intervention: Refractive surgery (photorefractive keratectomy, phakic intraocular lens implantation, or refractive lens exchange) chosen based on type and degree of refractive error and corneal characteristics
Who it was tested with: Children with neurodevelopmental disorders including autism spectrum disorder who are spectacle-intolerant and have refractive errors.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"This is an ongoing prospective cohort study of children with NDD who are spectacle-intolerant and undergoing refractive surgery at St. Louis Childrens Hospital starting July 2020" with measurements using "Adaptive Behavioral Assessment System, 3rd edition (ABAS-3) and Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd edition (SRS-2), completed by parents/caregivers" both before and after intervention. The study measures pre-surgical baselines but post-operative outcomes have not yet been reported, preventing assessment of intervention effectiveness.
Very small preliminary sample (n=9) with incomplete follow-up; post-operative data not yet available; no comparison group to control for natural development or placebo effects
