The problem
Intervention: PROCOMIDA food-assisted maternal and child health and nutrition program: family food rations of varying size plus individual rations (corn-soy blend, lipid-based nutrient supplement or micronutrient powder) for mothers from pregnancy to 6 months postpartum and children aged 6-24 months
Who it was tested with: Children aged 1-24 months and their mothers in Guatemala (about 575 per group across six groups).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We used a longitudinal, cluster-randomized controlled trial with groups varying in family ration sizes" - random assignment of clusters to groups with a control makes this an experimental design.
Results differ by ration size and type, so not all program versions were equally effective. The abstract gives no information on attrition, adherence or long-term follow-up beyond 24 months.
