The problem
Intervention: Nutrition-specific interventions including lipid-based nutrient supplements, fortified foods, and food-based strategies
Who it was tested with: Children in their first 1,000 days of life in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A systematic review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Searches were performed in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials for studies published up to September 2025. Randomized controlled trials, cluster-randomized trials, cohort, and quasi-experimental studies assessing nutrition-specific interventions were included." The review evaluated multiple study designs with comparison groups or longitudinal follow-up, constituting experimental-level evidence that nutrition-specific interventions can reduce stunting when well-designed and appropriately timed.
Substantial heterogeneity across studies prevented meta-analysis; findings were synthesized narratively. Effect sizes vary by context, limiting generalizability of results.
