The problem
Intervention: Multiple interventions tested: academic skill training, gender-awareness skill training, empowerment interventions, and safe spaces programmes
Who it was tested with: Adolescent girls in Bangladesh and Zambia, analysed by subgroups based on literacy, poverty, community paid-work participation rates, and premarital sex norms.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We utilize data sets from two randomized controlled trials conducted by the Population Council in Bangladesh and Zambia. Within each respective country, we estimate the impacts of the interventions on marriage and pregnancy among adolescent girls using the analysis of covariance estimator by different social contexts based on community-level variables." The study uses experimental designs from two RCTs to examine how contextual factors modify intervention effectiveness on child marriage and pregnancy outcomes.
Study focuses on two countries and may not generalise globally. The analysis is post-hoc stratification of trial data rather than trials powered to detect heterogeneous effects. Mechanisms explaining why context matters are not examined.
