The problem
Intervention: Maternal dolutegravir-based antiretroviral treatment compared to efavirenz-based treatment during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Who it was tested with: 1,019 HIV-exposed uninfected infants born to 844 women living with HIV in rural Tanzania, followed to 18 months of age.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We modelled continuous outcomes using linear random effects models and binary outcomes using logistic generalised estimating equations." The study used adjusted statistical models comparing two exposure groups prospectively followed over time, constituting a quasi-experimental design with comparison group, though observational rather than randomized.
Observational design without randomization; potential confounding by calendar year of enrolment and other unmeasured factors; descriptive analyses suggest possible regimen differences that disappeared in adjusted models
