The problem
Intervention: Mental health screening using the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)
Who it was tested with: Children born with gastroschisis aged 3-17 years (n=57 for parent-report, n=23 for child-report aged 11-17) from a tertiary pediatric surgical center.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Parents of 57 children with gastroschisis aged 3-17 years and 23 children aged 11-17 years from a tertiary pediatric surgical center completed the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)" showing a descriptive cross-sectional design; the study identifies associations between neonatal complications and mental health difficulties but does not evaluate whether screening itself improves outcomes, making evidence inconclusive about intervention effectiveness.
Single-center study with small sample size limits generalizability. Cross-sectional design cannot determine causation or whether screening interventions reduce mental health difficulties. SDQ is a screening tool, not a diagnostic instrument.
