The problem
Intervention: Reunification and reintegration of children from residential care facilities to family-based, home-based care
Who it was tested with: 23 children aged under 13 years (11 children aged 8–13 years directly interviewed, 12 younger children aged less than 8 years whose information came from caregivers) and their 23 caregivers in six districts of central Uganda.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"We conducted 11 in-depth interviews with older children aged 8–13 years and 23 in-depth interviews from the caregivers...12 months post reunification from RCFs into HBC." The study measures children's and caregivers' experiences at a single timepoint after reintegration occurred, representing a post-intervention observation rather than a before-and-after comparison with baseline data.
Qualitative study without comparison group; cannot establish causality or determine prevalence of positive versus negative outcomes; small sample size; relies partly on caregiver reports for younger children
