The problem
Intervention: Child labour (exposure through work)
Who it was tested with: Indonesian adolescents from household survey sample.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We use legislative minimum wage as an instrument to address the endogeneity bias of child work" and "Results from the instrumental variable quantile estimation indicate that the effect of child labour is heterogeneous across the mental health distribution." The study uses a quasi-experimental design with an exogenous policy instrument to establish causal relationships between child labour exposure and mental health outcomes measured longitudinally.
Study is limited to Indonesia and uses instrumental variables approach which relies on assumptions about minimum wage policy effects. Cross-country generalisability is unclear.
