The problem
Intervention: Standard-of-care therapy for autoimmune hepatitis consisting of prednisone induction at 1-2 mg/kg daily with gradual dose weaning
Who it was tested with: 61 children (66% female, median age at diagnosis 11.5 years) diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis between 1997-2023.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Children diagnosed with AIH between 1997 and 2023 at SickKids had serial growth measurements. Mixed effect models assessed the impact of time and daily steroid exposure on z-scores." This study measured children before and after treatment without a comparison group receiving alternative therapy, making it a pre-post design that demonstrates the standard treatment approach produces adverse growth effects rather than evaluating whether an alternative intervention works better.
Single-center observational study without comparison to alternative treatment protocols; cannot establish causation or test whether modified approaches would improve outcomes; limited generalizability to other populations
