The problem
Intervention: Abridged verbal autopsy tool based on expert algorithm method for determining causes of neonatal, child, and adult deaths
Who it was tested with: Deaths of neonates (0-27 days), children (1 month-11 years), and adults (12-49 years) recorded in three tertiary general hospitals and one tertiary paediatric hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, India (n=270, 90 per age group).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"VA interviews were conducted between July 2024 and January 2025. Causes of death were assigned using two approaches: (1) underlying medical record diagnoses and (2) a hierarchical computer-based VA algorithm. Diagnostic metrics were used to validate algorithmic causes against medical diagnoses." The study measured VA diagnoses against medical records without a control group, representing a single-group validation design.
Study conducted only in tertiary hospital settings in one city, limiting generalizability to community or rural contexts. Medical diagnoses themselves may not represent true gold standard for causes of death. No comparison group to evaluate relative performance of the abridged tool against the full WHO instrument.
