The problem
Intervention: Exposure to first-grade schooling in German primary schools
Who it was tested with: First-grade students from immigrant and native families in Germany.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We use a differential exposure approach to decompose learning over the school year into two causally distinct components: learning by exposure to schooling (school factors) a vis learning by being older at test (non-school factors)." This design allows causal decomposition by comparing how much learning occurs during the school year versus natural maturation, enabling assessment of whether school exposure reduces inequality.
The study examines only first-grade students in Germany and cannot identify specific school mechanisms or factors causing differential benefits across groups.
