The problem
Intervention: Social change interventions targeting adults to counter beliefs about adolescent sexuality and prepubescent marriage; interventions to keep teenage girls in school beyond first cycle
Who it was tested with: Ever-married women aged 20-29 years in Zimbabwe.
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"We applied a propensity score-based method, which allowed us to mimic a hypothetical experiment and estimate outcomes between treated and untreated subjects." Propensity score matching is a quasi-experimental method that approximates a randomized comparison by matching similar individuals with and without the exposure (early marriage), strengthening causal inference from observational data.
The study design is observational with propensity score matching rather than true randomization; cannot establish causal direction or account for unmeasured confounders; examines only one educational milestone (first cycle completion) rather than overall educational trajectories.
