The problem
Intervention: Community facilitator-led participatory learning and action (PLA) women's groups delivering eight biweekly sessions over 14 weeks, offered in face-to-face or online formats
Who it was tested with: South Asian families in East London (Tower Hamlets and Newham), with 263 participants enrolled.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A three-arm pilot feasibility cluster randomised controlled trial (ISRCTN10234623) was conducted in Tower Hamlets and Newham, East London (May–September 2022), with 12 wards randomised 1:1:1 to face-to-face PLA, online PLA, or usual care." The design was experimental with randomised allocation and comparison groups, but feasibility endpoints rather than efficacy were the primary focus, and the trial was unable to generate usable outcome data to evaluate whether the intervention improves infant feeding.
The study did not achieve sufficient retention or attendance to test the intervention's effectiveness. Most groups did not complete the full PLA cycle, and outcome measures had very low completion rates. The study was halted in Newham due to retention failures.
