The problem
Intervention: Youth development accounts (YDA) with matched savings, with or without multiple family group (MFG) counseling
Who it was tested with: School-going adolescent girls aged 14-17 years in Uganda (n=1,260).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"A total of 1260 girls aged 14 to 17 years were randomized at the school level to (1) standard health and sex education (controls; n = 408 students; n = 16 schools), (2) 1-to-1 matched savings youth development account (YDA; n = 471 students; n = 16 schools), or (3) combination intervention (YDA and multiple family group [YDA+MFG]; n = 15 schools; n = 381 students). Mixed-effects models were fitted." The study used random assignment at the school level with comparison groups and multiple follow-up time points, meeting criteria for experimental design.
The study found no effect on sexual risk-taking behaviors, which was a primary outcome. Follow-up was limited to 24 months and participants were school-going girls, which may not represent the most vulnerable adolescents.
