The problem
Intervention: Daily oral nutrition supplement of 510 mL administered for 180 days
Who it was tested with: 91 children aged 12–36 months (mean 26.7 months) in Kelantan, Malaysia with height-for-age Z-scores between <-1.0 SD and >-3 SD.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"A community-based, single arm intervention was conducted among 91 children in Kelantan, Malaysia... Anthropometric measurements were taken at baseline (T0), day-90 (mid-intervention), and day-180 (post-intervention)." This is a pre-post design measuring the same children over three time points without a comparison group.
No control group to compare against; single-arm design means improvements could be due to factors other than the supplement (e.g. seasonal variation, regression to the mean). Limited to one region in Malaysia.
