The problem
Intervention: Psychiatric day clinic treatment involving reintegration support and active efforts to facilitate return to or improved attendance at childcare centres
Who it was tested with: Toddlers and preschool-aged children (N=177) with early mental health disorders attending a psychiatric day clinic across two cohorts (2018/2019 and 2023/2024).
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"In 78.1% of the excluded patients in the combined samples, (partial) reintegration or improvement of social integration was recorded or initiated during treatment." The study demonstrates that psychiatric day clinic treatment can facilitate reintegration of excluded young children into childcare settings, addressing a barrier to their early development and participation.
Retrospective design without a formal control group; outcomes measured as 'recorded or initiated' reintegration rather than confirmed completion; reasons for cohort differences not explored; no data on maintenance of reintegration post-treatment or longer-term developmental outcomes
