The problem
Intervention: Geographical accessibility analysis to identify barriers and inform placement of immunisation services; recommendations for improving road networks, establishing new health centres, and scaling up outreach vaccination activities
Who it was tested with: Children in Kaloleni and Rabai Sub-counties, Kilifi County, Kenya.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"We used longitudinal survey data from the health demographic surveillance system implemented in Kaloleni and Rabai Sub-counties in Kenya... We then fitted a hierarchical Bayesian multivariable model to explore the effect of travel time on pentavalent vaccine coverage adjusting for confounding factors identified a priori." The design uses longitudinal surveillance data with multivariable modelling to assess a defined intervention (geographical accessibility analysis) for the problem of low rural immunisation coverage.
Study limited to two sub-counties in one coastal county; cross-sectional analysis of associations; other confounding factors affecting vaccination uptake may not be fully captured.
