The problem
Intervention: Home-based combined psychological and parenting intervention delivered by lay counsellors: 10 sessions (4 antenatal, 6 postnatal, plus booster at 16 months) combining behavioural activation for depression with a parenting programme adapted from UNICEF/WHO Care for Child Development
Who it was tested with: 528 pregnant HIV-positive women aged ≥16 years meeting depression criteria (EPDS ≥9) from antenatal clinics in rural KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"This randomised controlled trial aims to evaluate the effect of a home-based intervention, combining a psychological treatment for depression and a parenting programme for perinatally depressed HIV-positive women." The study uses cluster randomisation with a comparison group and intention-to-treat analysis, which meets the criteria for experimental design.
This document is a protocol only and contains no outcome data; the trial design and feasibility are described but effectiveness is unknown pending completion and analysis of the trial
