The problem
Intervention: Comparison of ADHD prescription rates between children born just before and after the September 1 school entry cutoff in England
Who it was tested with: Children in England aged 5 to 15, compared by school entry age.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"Exploiting a sharp school-entry cutoff and comparing children born just before and after September 1, we estimate both age- and grade-specific effects of early school entry." This quasi-experimental approach uses a natural policy cutoff to create comparable groups, allowing causal inference about how school entry timing affects ADHD diagnosis rates.
Study limited to England's administrative data; findings may not generalise to other countries. Cannot definitively determine whether differences represent overdiagnosis of younger starters or underdiagnosis of older starters. Relies on prescription records as a proxy for ADHD diagnosis.
