The problem
Intervention: Interventions to delay sexual initiation by improving girls' education and addressing socioeconomic inequalities
Who it was tested with: Young women aged 15-24 years in Zambia (n=5,833).
Experience from people who deliver programmes: stories, case studies and lessons learned. Valuable for understanding how and why, and for spotting what to test next, but not a measure of effect.
"Secondary data from the Zambia Demographic and Health Survey (ZDHS 2024) was used in the study. A weighted sample of 5,833 young women was considered in the study. Kaplan-Meier curve, log-rank test, and Cox proportional hazards regression were used to establish the median age at first sexual experience and identify determinants of time to first sexual experience." The study identifies associations between education, wealth, and delayed sexual initiation but cannot prove these factors cause the delay.
Cross-sectional design cannot establish causation; data are based on self-report which may be subject to recall and social desirability bias; unmeasured confounders may explain observed associations
