The problem
Intervention: Increasing sleep duration to 10 hours or more
Who it was tested with: Children in Japan followed from birth to 3 years of age.
The same group is measured before the intervention and again afterwards, with a baseline and an endline and sometimes a midline. Change is visible, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
"To elucidate this issue, we investigated the association between sleep duration, child development, and the sleep environment. We used data from an ongoing nationwide prospective birth cohort study in Japan." The study measured sleep duration longitudinally at multiple ages and assessed developmental outcomes, but lacks a comparison group receiving an intervention, making it observational rather than experimental.
Observational design cannot establish causation; sleep duration and developmental outcomes measured by caregiver report; potential bidirectional relationships not explored; generalizability to non-Japanese populations unclear.
