The problem
Intervention: Installation of energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) or portable air cleaners (PACs) to reduce indoor air pollutants and mold levels
Who it was tested with: Children aged 5-17 years and adults with physician-diagnosed asthma in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas (80+ households).
Children or communities are compared with a group that did not receive the intervention, or followed over years. This is the design that best separates what the intervention did from everything else that changed.
"The AIRVAC study is a single-blind, placebo-controlled, 4-arm, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial, with a pre-intervention period of up to 1 year and a 1-year post-intervention period." This is a rigorous experimental design comparing active interventions against sham controls with sufficient follow-up time to measure effects, though results are not yet available.
This is a protocol describing a planned study with no results reported. The actual effectiveness of the interventions cannot be assessed from this document.
